I originally called these works the 'insomnia series’ or #nightstudio which referred not just to the hour of the day when they were produced but also to my mood and state of mind. The paintings were equivalent to counting sheep- done in a meditative state and with a purpose of calming down and gathering myself at the end of the day (I imagine how others use a drink or meditation, yoga, etc). As time has gone on, this work has expanded beyond night hours, so the title is a bit of a misnomer.
These works range from 2012-2015. They are small, painted in gouache on Yupo paper, and remind me of John Berger’s quote about Morandi: “objects which don’t yet exist… They are not objects. They are places (everything has its place), places where some little thing is coming into being.”
